Which child hasn’t loved the Famous Five stories at some part of their lives?  I loved them myself and excitedly bought the set for my own children many years later.  Nowadays the paperback versions are just too modern for my liking, so if like me, you love books to be exactly as you remember them, this first edition 1949 version is a real treasured find.  Only one copy available, this special book would make a lovely birth or christening gift, or simply a collectors item.

In these days of computers and fast-action technology, the humble printed word is often overlooked.  With our busy lives, many of us only read when we have to, ie for reference, and have little time to actually read for the sake of enjoyment.  However, the ability to read fluently is a skill that should be celebrated with avid book readers developing other skills as a direct result.  Children especially gain so much from reading, and the influence of well written classic literature does much to broaden their education.

There are plenty of bookshops on the High Street that sell a vast range of shiny new books, but sometimes it is nice to find a very old book, perhaps with a history of its own.  One bookshop, ‘March House Books’, may have just what you are looking for.  As they say, “All of our books are ‘gently used’ but hopefully not ‘loved to death’ – none are new and each has its own unique history.  Sometimes there is a little wear and tear or there may be a loving dedication perhaps from a mother to a son or a father to a daughter and this will be noted in our description“.  I love the books that I own that have been annotated by personal messages to recipients and am only disappointed that I don’t have the life-story of these people.  My husband on the other hand, thinks that this practice is defacing the books – so its all down to personal preference!
